Federer – Djokovic, The Classic Matchup

By Caroline McKinley

Novak Djokovic, number 1 tennis player in the world, played Roger Federer, number 2 in the world, yesterday in the finals of the ATP tennis tournament in London, England.  The two outstanding tennis players have matched up 29 times, with Federer leading 16-13 in wins.  The rivalry between the two players is the biggest rivalry in grandslam history, with facing each other 11 times.  In 2011, their French Open semi finals match is considered one of the greatest matches in tennis history by the ATP.

Monday, November 12th, Federer and Djokovic faced each other in the ATP World Tour Finals, and it was one of their more exciting matches.  Federer broke Djokovic early to get ahead 2-0 in the first set.  After 10 more hard fought games, they went into a tiebreaker, where Djokovic pulled out an 8-6 win to win the first set.

At the start of the second set, Federer broke Djokovic again to start off the set strong.  He held a 2 game lead all the way to 5-3, and Federer served for the set and even had 2 set points.  However on forced errors, Federer couldn’t close out the set, and Djokovic broke him, and had the ball back in his serve.  Djokovic pulled it together and won the second set, beating Federer to improve his record against Federer to 3-2 this year.

In other tournaments, Federer and Djokovic have faced each other on many occasions. In the Australian Open, they have played 3 times, with Djokovic winning twice and Federer winning once.  In 2008, Djokovic beat Federer in straight sets, marking the first time anyone has ever beat Federer in 3 straight sets since he became number 1 in the world.

Another classic match between the two players was in the 2012 Wimbledon semi-finals. Federer won 6–3, 3–6, 6–4, 6–3, and this win made Federer the first player to beat Djokovic in all four Grand Slams. This win for Federer disposed Djokovic’s ATP rankings.

As for the US Open, the two players have matched up five times, with Federer leading 3-2 in wins. One match in particular stands out between the two, and it happened in the 2011 semi finals.  Federer was up 2 sets and he had match points on his own serve.  However, Djokovic didn’t allow Federer to win, and he fought hard to come back.  Djokovic ended up winning this match, and advanced to the finals where he defeated Nadal to win the US Open.

Not only are these two tennis players amazing to watch play, but when they get on a court together, it seems like the world stops and you can not peel your eyes away from the tv.  They make shots like Federers famous between the legs shot in 2009 to have a match point, or amazing shots down the line that stuns the other player.  Regardless of their amazing tennis abilities, the best part about these two players is that they are both outstanding off the court as well.  They are great sports, and genuinely congratulate the other player on his win.  Whenever they match up, it is definitely a sight to see.
