Jurickson Profar, Remember the Name.

      By: Kalyn Reece

Jurickson Profar shined in his major league debut in Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Indians. The Texas Rangers 19-year-old rookie entered the game after second baseman Ian Kinsler was scratched from the lineup due to stiffness in his lower back.

Profar, who is a switch hitter, was batting ninth in the line-up when he finally came up to bat in the third inning. With a 2-1 count from Cleveland’s Zach McAllister, Jurickson Profar sent the ball soaring 391 feet over the right field wall.  This at-bat puts Profar up there setting records. He is the second-youngest player to homer in his first career at-bat and third teenager to do so, according to Elias Sports Bureau.  The record is still held by Whitey Lockman, in 1945 and he was 18 years old at the time.   Profar stated in an interview “I was thinking, ‘GO, go, go, go go,’ after I hit it.”  In his next at-bat he doubled, and Texas manager Ron Washington stated later in an interview “Mother Nature called, he got a couple hits and maybe his stomach realized what was happening.  It was a special day for a special kid, this kid is blessed.” Its already in the record book, that Jurickson Profar is the first player to homer his first time up to bat in a Texas uniform.

Jurickson Profar may have been nervous, but not afraid. Profar stated in another interview “He (Washington) asked me how many games I have played at second base” Profar who has played more games at shortstop than second replied. “He said OK you’re in the game, playing second.” Jurickson said he was shocked but ready. Jurickson Profar proved exactly how ready he was and he stepped up the plate and showed the world that he belonged on that field and among the Texas Rangers.

So who is this young teenager, Jurickson Profar? Well little is known of Profar up to this point. He was born on February 20, 1993 in Wilmestad, Curacao making him the only player in Major League baseball born in that year.  He is listed as one of the top prospects in baseball.  Profar signed with the Texas Rangers in July 2009 and spent 2010 playing with the Spokane Indians then the 2011 season with the Hickory Crawdads. Then his big break came when he was called up to the Rangers major league roster August 21, 2012 as mentioned earlier.  From there you know the story, but what’s to come for the young 19-year-old Jurickson Profar.

I agree with Texas manager Washington, that Profar is a blessed young man with a great deal of talent, but that he should not be entered into the Hall of Fame just yet. He was an outstanding attitude and the world in front of him especially after coming into the ‘big leagues’ as he did. Jurickson Profar my opinion will be a name that will be progressively more evident in our future, just wait.
