Sidelines Main Focus for Sidebar Stories

From the Olympics to the Super Bowl, spectators at the actual event and at home are not only interested in what is taking place on the field amongst the athletes; they also want the inside scoop on what is occurring on the sidelines.

During the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, the parents of American gymnast Aly Raisman made headlines after a YouTube video featuring their anxious and excited reactions to their daughter’s gymnastics routine received thousands of views and comments. USA Today and the Huffington Post¬†interviewed Mr. and Mrs. Rick Raisman about the intensity of their reactions to Aly’s routine that received so much attention from viewers, which garnered more media attention¬†than their daughter’s performance.

More recent headlines from the sidelines featured Katherine Webb, University of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron’s girlfriend, at the BCS National Championship. After Brent Musburger’s controversial comments on Webb’s looks garnered weeks of media attention, Webb continues to attract a large amount of media consideration on her future plans of starring in a celebrity diving competition and being featured in Sports Illustrated upcoming swimsuit edition.

When it comes to the upcoming Super Bowl XLVII, the parents of the two competing head coaches, Jack and Jackie Harbaugh, parents of John (Ravens) and Jim (49ers) Harbaugh, are expected to grab considerable media attention. Networks and camera crews have already been in contact with NFL governing bodies and have employed spotters in order to track where Mr. and Mrs. Harbaugh will be sitting during the game after realizing how interested viewers are in seeing the reactions of what’s taking place on the field from athletes’ loved ones, such as the previously mentioned stories. Just like advertisements during the Super Bowl generate a large amount of conversation amongst the media and sports fans, the Harbaugh family is likely to be discussed immediately after each broadcast and print story of the final score and major plays of the actual game.

And for those of you who were more interested in the actual athletic events taking place during these sidebar stories from the sidelines, Aly Raisman got a 14.450 on the uneven bars, AJ McCarron completed 23 of 34 passes for 234 yards to help lead the Crimson Tide to a win over Notre Dame at the BCS National Championship and John and Jim Harbough led their teams to defeat the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons in the NFC and AFC championships respectfully to move on to the Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 3.
